Registering as a social worker: recap

You’re about to embark on your journey as a social worker, how exciting! But before you go any further, you’ll need to register as a social worker with Social Work England. Here is a recap of how to do so if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed with the process.

Becoming a Social Work England member

Once you’ve finished your social work qualification (i.e., you have written confirmation and SWE has received the pass list from your course provider), you can apply.

  1. Visit the Social Work England website and create an online account. This will be used to manage your application process.
  2. Fill out the online application form with accurate and up-to-date information. You must provide details about your qualifications, employment history, and other relevant information.
  3. Be prepared to pay the registration fees. The fees can vary, so check the Social Work England website for the most current information on registration costs.
  4. Familiarise yourself with the CPD requirements set by Social Work England. As part of your registration, you will be expected to engage in ongoing professional development activities.
  5. Update your registration annually (between 1 September and 30 November).

What else do I need?

  • Submit copies of your identification and proof of address documents for identity verification.
  • Provide information on your social work qualification.
  • Disclose any ‘non-protected’ criminal convictions or cautions.
  • Share details about any health conditions that may impact your role as a social worker.
