Now that Social Work England have changed the CPD requirements for social workers, it is important to get a head start on your CPD.
Social Work England have recently announced that CPD requirements will be changing for 2022. You need to meet these requirements by 30th November 2022 to be able to renew your registration for 2022 to 2023.
The new CPD requirements are as follows:
- Record a minimum of two pieces of CPD
- At least one of these two pieces of CPD need to be peer reflected

Some examples of CPD include reading social work books/articles and reflecting on these, listening to podcasts, reflect on feedback or a complaint, watch a TedTalk, attend a virtual or in-person CPD workshop, write a reflective piece with clear evidence of reflection on practice and learning from your degree and the impact of this on your practice. Click here to see more information about the types of CPD you can record.
Here are the top books for social workers to read that count as CPD:
- Post-Qualifying Social Work Practice Series from Learning Matters – this is a series of books aimed at busy social work practitioners who are looking to enhance their skills and extend their knowledge. These books cover a range of relevant topics that can enable you to engage critically and confidently with social work practice.
- How to Use Theory in Social Work Practice: An Essential Guide by Malcolm Payne – this book is a practical guide that condenses the practical features of social work theory but doesn’t oversimplify them. It can help social workers put their knowledge into action and view how everyday practice implements theoretical ideas.
- Practicing Critical Reflection in Social Care Organisations by Routledge – this book explores concrete examples of different strategies and activities aimed at creating and embedding critically reflective learning and working environments within social care. Critical reflection is critical for CPD and is a good skill to have as well as practice.
