It’s July, which can only mean two things…1) instant BBQs are sold out across the UK and 2) it’s Good Care Month!
Good Care Month celebrates carers and raises awareness for the unparalleled contribution they make to our society. More often than not, carers are unsung heroes and it’s about time we change that and work together to raise their profile!
Carry on reading to find out how you can show your support and appreciation for our wonderful carers this July.
1.Small acts of kindness
Notice that your elderly neighbour is always having food dropped off by their son? Why not offer to do it for them next time you’re off to big Tesco? Perhaps your friend with a disabled sibling needs a night off? Know someone recently diagnosed with dementia? Make sure to check in and provide a helping hand to the family where you can. Even something as simple as looking after a colleague’s child for an hour so they can catch up on Netflix can make a world of difference to a busy carer.
2.Support Networks
Encourage carers to connect with support groups or organisations that can provide resources and assistance. Offer to help them find relevant networks in their community. For example:
- Carers UK
- Carers Trust
- Action for Carers (Surrey based)
- Find a local carers support group via the Rethink Mental Illness website
- Get in touch with your local council to find out what support is available
3.Be kind
Remember, you never know what someone is going through so always be your kindest self. Make time for people and be there to listen when they need a cry or just a coffee and a vent! Again, it may not seem like a lot to you, but having someone to support you during hard times is invaluable.
Here at Social Personnel we admire and celebrate those who care for their friends and family day in, day out to help improve their quality of life.
